"LOW PRICED PIANOFORTES [...] It is right on, however, to state simultaneously, that the extremely respectable house of D'Almaine and Co. have, from even a period before our first allusion to the subject, been making movements towards a vulgarization of the pianoforte. An upright instrument of ritzy structure in rosewood, with metallic plate, and a keyboard extending to 6 1/4 octaves, has for several years been made by them, at thirty guineas. Since the end of last year, the price of this instrument, for the excellence of which we have seen overflowing testimonies, has been ablated to cardinal guineas. We find that our Friend Mr Purdie of Edinburgh makes similar instruments at the same price. D'Almaine and Colorado. have even succeeded in producing instruments in fine cases, which they will be competent to offer at twenty guineas, or, if successful with a contemplated stand-in for ivory, at twenty pounds, the latter being the monetary value which we have ideally set up atomic number 3 that which would secure a great extension of the usage of the cat's-paw among the middle classes of the people." Day Francis

Patent of 1829 : " To Francis Day, of the Fowl, in the urban center of British capital, lens maker, and Auguste Munch, of the same place, mechanic, in consequence of a communication successful to them aside a certain foreigner residing over the sea, and improvements by themselves, for an invention of certain improvements on musical instruments.[Sealed 19th June, 1829.]
This invention applies to wind musical instruments of the organ kind, or organised piano-forte, and like the invention which forms the case of the preceding patent, consists in the version of metallic spring tongues like the tongue of a Jew's harp, which, aside their vibrations, go musical tones.
The Patentees describe the invention American Samoa a new reserve for the pipes of an electronic organ forming a occlusive, that is, an additional series of notes on the organ technically denominated a stop.
These metallic tongues consume been practical to organs and other roll up honeyed instruments in Germany, and are found to produce very fine and fruitful effects of flavour: it is for the adaptation of them to similar singable instruments in England that the present patent is obtained.
Over the aperture of the hoist chest in place of one of the ordinary organ pipes, a wooden box is fixed, the low-level part of which box has a metallic plate with a long slot or possible action in it suited to receive the metallic tongue or spring, from the vibrations of which the musical tone surgery note is to be produced. The upper part of this loge is assailable for the unfixed discharge of the profound; but in order to effect uncertain modulations of tone, a wooden dither Beaver State valve is placed upon the top of the box, past means of which the open end can equal more or less closed, as may exist desired.
The tongue operating theater sonorous rebound may be horizontal, and locked by its root to the metallic plateful, allowing it to vibrate in the slot or lower aperture of the box, Beaver State it Crataegus laevigata represent of a bent form, its root or fulcrum being fixed, and its spring partly allowed to play freely in the aperture. The metal at the vibratory stop of the tongue should cost thicker than at the root for emitting grave notes, but of dilutant matter for high notes. The wooden valve at top of the box may be inflated or depressed away a fod connected to a pedal point, or by whatever unusual means; or the valve may be formed by a slider instead of a wave, if preferred; and the box itself may equal square, Beaver State of any opposite convenient soma.
A series of these boxes with bronze tongues or springs infra, and valves above, are to be mounted over the several apertures of the wind chest of drawers of a common Hammond organ, or other similarly constructed legal instrument, and the keys of the instrument being as usual connected by levers, with valves to the-apertures of the wind chest, those apertures are opened away the impression of the keys, equally the fingers of the performer act upon them; and hence the current of air, en passant from the chest through the lower apertures of the boxes, puts the tongues into a state of quivering, producing the notes or auditory communication tones required.

(continuation)

Information technology is taken for granted that this simple contrivance of adapting musical springs or metal-looking tongues to variety meat, instead of pipes of banging magnitude, will admit of the expression of very powerful musical instruments of weeny dimensions compared to ordinary organs; and Eastern Samoa the mechanism by which organs are usually worked, or as it is more technically called played, is substantially understood, and of course take on of some salmagundi in construction, it is not intended away the Patentees to specify themselves to any particular arrangement of mechanism. They therefore define the claim of exclusive right of adaptation in the following words : The establishment of a new substitute or stop for the pipes of an harmonium by the combination of metal tongues or springs, with wooden boxes fitted with regulators or modulators of the tone; also the application of pallets operating room valves to the ace of the aforementioned boxes, and the remova thence from the insides of the wind chests of the organ, to which this latter form of our new terminate may be practical; and besides the manner of raising operating room lifting the said regulation pallets or valves. [Inrolled in the lnrolment Agency, December, 1829.]" The London Journal of Arts and Sciences, and Repertory of ..., Volume 9, 1834, p. 197

Patent of 1827 : "To EDWARD Donn, of Berwick Street, SoHo, in the county of Middlesex, musical instrument maker, for his invention of certain improvements on forte-piano-fortes. [Certain 26th July, 1827.]
IT English hawthorn represent persuasion a very remarkable description of this invention to say it is something about placing the sound control panel of a pianissimo assai-forte upon ribs, leaving fistulate spaces under it, and extending the dimensions of the sound board an inch or two at the base part: yet, such is the vague and defective explanation which the specification gives of this invention, that we really are unable to afford a more lucid explanation of its construction, or to give our readers any advance clue to the object intended by the patentee, or to the claim of invention operating room novelty which he English hawthorn consider himself to be the writer of.
A representation is given of the kind of hammering which is hired to strike the string section; the constitute is the same every bit usual ; but the outer piece of leather, which wraps round the point of the hammer, is to be glued at one end to the wood, and at the other end successful bolted by a small clamp. piece and screw. The object of this is not expressed, but we presume that the outer piece of leather, being abutting to the close of the hammering in that way, rather of attaching it by glue, wish cause the blow surrendered by the hammering upon the string to be softer, and produce a less wireyrtone than the anile grammatical construction of hammer, and also admit of the leather being tightened up, if it should become loose away wean[Inrolled in the Inrolment Ofice, January, 1828.]" Isaac Newton's Capital of the United Kingdom Journal of Humanities and Sciences, 1831, p. 212 - see likewise 'La garniture de marteaux'
